  1. Points, Lines and Line SegmentsVocabulary: line segment, endpoints, parallel, intersection and perpendicular Materials: Lesson 16.1 excel spreadsheet handout

  2. Lines • A line is straight and continues in both directions. It has no endpoints.

  3. What it actually is: line segment line segment D E Write: DE or ED Line segment and endpoints • A line segment is a piece of a line. It has two endpoints.

  4. Where do you see line segments in these pictures?

  5. Write: YZ KL parallel What it actually is: Y parallel Z K L “is parallel to”

  6. Where do you see parallel lines in these pictures?

  7. intersecting lines What it actually is: Lines that cross each other. J These lines intersect at point J.

  8. Place a point at each intersection.

  9. The angle makes a square corner, which is called a right angle. What it actually is: Two lines that form right angles. perpendicular

  10. What it actually is: An angle that makes a square corner right angle

  11. Do you see any right angles? Use the RED pen to show parallel lines. Use the BLUE pen to show perpendicular lines. Place a GREENpoint on intersecting lines.
