This presentation by Jim George at the Region III States Meeting on May 12, 2009, highlights Maryland's approach to success in three levels: level 1 - removal of impairing substances or stressors from waterbodies, level 2 - incremental improvement in water quality, and level 3 - pollution or ecological restoration. The presentation also explores different options for each level of success, including water quality analysis, pH restoration, bacterial reductions, habitat restoration, and more.

Maryland’s Approach to Success Stories Presented to the Region III States Meeting May 12, 2009 Presented by Jim George
Three Types of Success • Level 1: Removal of a waterbody from the 303(d) list for an impairing substance or stressor, • Level 2: Incremental improvement in water quality • Reduction in a pollutant or • Improvement in aquatic life • Level 3: Improvements in pollution or ecological restoration, e.g., removal of fish blockages or physical habitat improvements.
Level 1 Options • Water Quality Analyses • pH Restoration • Biological Restoration Greater: • MD lists at watershed scale • Some watersheds are barely impaired • Bacteria Reductions • SAV increases (Sediment in Tidal Waters)
Level 2 Options • Interim Progress Toward Level 1 • Localized Restoration • Long-Term Trend Analyses • MD Core/Trend Network • Non-tidal Rivers • Statistical Analyses of Nontidal Nutrients • Statistical Analyses of Biological Data
Level 3 Options • Interim Progress on Level 2 • Habitat Restoration • Stream Blockage Removals • Wetlands Enhancement • Removal of Non-Native Species
