Description • Anoxia • Total lack of oxygen • Hypoxia • Varying degrees of oxygen deficiency
Causes • Air entry to lungs impeded • Diseases affecting lungs • Reduced haemoglobin content • Heart Disease
Other Causes • External Pressure • Narrowing of respiratory passages • Inhalation of smoke • Deprivation of oxygen • Hyperventilation • Long snorkel dives
Treatment • Remove from cause • Airway (A) • Breathing (B) • Circulation (C)
Drowning • Sudden severe asphyxia • Complicated by water • Lower body temperature • Inhalation of water
Types • Fresh Water Drowning • Salt Water Drowning • Dry Drowning
Fresh Water Drowning • Water enters bloodstream causing Haemodilution • Affects balance of blood chemicals • Cardiac arrest
Salt Water Drowning • Fluid is drawn from bloodstream causing Haemoconcentration • Lowers blood volume • Cardiac arrest • Chances of resuscitation may be better with this type of drowning
Dry Drowning • Involuntary spasm closes off Larynx • No water enters the lungs • Results in hypoxia • Unconsciousness
Treatment • Remove victim from water • If necessary commence EAR with victim still on surface of water • Give C.P.R. if necessary • Treat for shock • Remove to hospital in all cases • Acquaint medical personnel with details of submersion e.g. type and duration • Secondary Drowning
