Ian Eardley The National Surgical Fellowship Scheme
Background • A large number of non training “Fellowship” posts have been available for several years (Pre and post CCT) • The DOH funded 70 Post CCT Fellowship posts in 2007 to release training numbers to deal with the ST3 bulge associated with MMC • Several specialties have Deanery funded interface posts eg Hand Fellowships (Pre CCT)
Background • Several surgical specialty curricula produce “generalists” without (many) subspecialist skills • Fellowship training (with acquisition ofsubspecialist skills) is increasingly a requirement for consultant posts in several specialties • Fellowship training is currently unregulated
Background • In 2009, RCS Council agreed proposals to develop a National Surgical Fellowship scheme • In 2010, a cross specialty group was established (including representatives of the Specialty Associations) to oversee the institution of this programme • In 2011, RCS Council approved proposals for quality assurance of Fellowship posts
Objectives • Develop a register of Fellowship posts • Develop quality assurance processes for these posts • Develop processes for trainee assessment • Manpower planning • Lobby for central funding
Quality Assurance of the Post • Employing Trust applies to RCS England • QA Department coordinates assessment of the post by SAC and Specialty Association • If successful, approval given, subject to review for a period of up to 5 years • Annual review via online trainee evaluation and logbooks
Rationale for Approval • Provides a structured educational experience prior to or immediately after CCT • Is designed to deliver the requirements of a subspecialty which is not readily available within CCT training • Has an established curriculum • Does not impinge on the training of pre-CCT trainees • Allied to workforce opportunities in the specialty
Who can undertake a Fellowship? • Senior Trainees (OOPT) • CCT holders wishing to obtain additional expertise • Newly appointed consultants wishing to obtain additional skills • Existing Consultants wishing to learn new skills
What do Trusts get …….? • Advertise the post with the College Eagle motif and strap line; • “This fellowship post has been approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and the …… specialty association” • Listing on the College website
Future Plans • Develop a register of such posts • Develop quality assurance processes (Launch 2012) • Develop processes for trainee assessment • Manpower planning • Lobby for central funding For further information contact: Anna Yerokhinaayerokhina@rcseng.ac.uk Ian Eardley ian.eardley@btinternet.com
