NIHR Remit • Research capacity to improve health and health care • Patients, samples or data from patients, people who are not patients, populations, health technology assessment and health services research • Clearly demonstrate the potential to have an impact on the needs of patients and the public within 5 years of its completion • The NIHR does not fund basic research or work involving animals and/or animal tissue

  9. Which award? • Career development fellowship ...plus • PhD completed 3-6 years ago • Several peer reviewed publications required • More that 1 grants (as PI or co-applicant) • Increasing evidence of research impact on NHS • Developing research collaborations

Which award? • Senior research fellowship ...plus • PhD completed more than 6 years ago • Many peer reviewed publications • Many research grants (both as lead- and co-applicant) • Substantial impact of research on NHS • Well developed research collaborations • Experience of research capacity development

What the funding provides • Open to all professionals working in NIHR remit • Covers: • Full salary • Tuition Fees • Research costs • Training and development • Awards 3 years FT (4 or 5 years PT) • Annual competition: • Launch in the Autumn • Closing date in early January • Applicant: • Some previous research experience • Some outputs from research • Evidence of commitment to research career • Open to all professionals working in NIHR remit.

Person • Career trajectory shows good momentum and commitment to research. • Good undergraduate degree + Masters degree or equivalent + PhD (if appropriate) • Career gaps appropriately justified • Outputs commensurate with stage in career. • Peer reviewed publications • Research grants • Teaching & training other research students • History of research that benefits the NHS / patients

  14. Project (PhD Fellowhips) • Good scientific quality • Good rationale; clear aims; methods consistent with aims; outputs of value to NHS • Sufficient to meet fellowship requirements in scale and scope • PhD: single project with underpinning theory • Other: coherent programme of research • Extends candidate’s research skills

  15. Training (PhD candidates) • Appraisal of candidate to identify gaps in research skills • Appraisal of proposed research to identify skills required • Training programme meets needs of candidate and project. • Selected source/provider of training well justified.

  16. Host (PhD Fellowhips) • Institution has… • High RAE rating • Good research track record in relevant field • Good programmes of research support • Supervisor/mentor has… • High academic standing in field • Expertise in methods required for project • Experience of supervision / mentorship • Time to commit to student

  17. NIHR Health Research Fellowships • Interviews • Good formal presentation skills (e.g. clear message; good visual aids; keeping to time) • Able to explain purpose and methods of research in lay terms; aware of research pitfalls • General knowledge of subject • Clarity of career trajectory

NIHR Health Research Fellowships • Common problems • Candidate CV and career trajectory show slow progress or lack of preparation for award • Training programme does not match student needs or demands of project • Host institution and/or supervisor have weak track record in research or supervision of research • Research is poorly developed or overly ambitious

NIHR Health Research Fellowships • Keys to success • Start preparations well in advance • Pay attention to rules & guidelines • Candidate & supervisor/mentor should work together on project & training programme • Ensure all elements of application are well integrated (person, project, training, host)
