Era Key FactsPolitics: • In the 19th century Thomas Jefferson believed voters could be divided into two “Natural” parties known as the Democrats and Republicans. • Federalist Party: Is considered the first American political party in this time. • Whig Party: Was formed to oppose Andrew Jackson’s policies and came together in 1834. They remained a major party throughout the 1840’s.

He was known as the father of modern surgery. He increased the cleanliness in the operating room and decreased the amount of deaths and infections after surgery.
Scientist Key FactsWilhelm Conrad: • Born March 27, 1845 and died February 10,1923. He saw a glowing fluorescent screen on a table at the University of Wurzburg and determined that the fluorescence was caused by invisible rays coming from the partially evacuated glass that was being used to study cathode rays. For his discovery he detected and produced x-rays which we use today to view the inside of the human body.
Scientist Key FactsFelix Hoffmann: • Born January 21, 1868 and died February 8,1946. He synthesized aspirin by replicating salicylic acid, a substance found in willow bark. Aspirin was the first mass produced drug, for consumers used it as a pain killer but latter found that it prevents strokes and heart attacks.
