  1. Article2: Globalrefininggroup.com Catalytic Converters – Why Are They So Important? In the last few decades, production and sales in automobile industry has seen a linear growth curve. Well, it’s a good indicator that global economy is booming. People can easily afford cars and bikes now. Distances have now shrunk, and commuting has become easier. But this flooding of automobiles on the streets have raised an alarming concern too – Pollution! The shocking increase in the levels of pollution is already a problem. In some cities, the industrial growth has already made it difficult for mankind to even breathe. So what pollutes our air? It’s our factories; our space exploration programs, our vehicles – in a nutshell, it’s us! The list of our doings is endless! It’s like we are trying to kill everyone around us, and ourselves too; you can simply call it both genocide and suicide – who knew the development is going to cost so much! Something needs to be done seriously, and as they say – need is the mother of invention. So were invented catalytic converters. The purpose of invention of catalytic converters is to improve the quality of air by reducing the emission levels from automobiles and factories. Of course it can’t reduce pollution problems to zero; it’s not a divine incarnate, but something is better than nothing! A catalytic converter controls emissions from exhausts by converting toxic particulate emissions to less toxic pollutants by catalyzing an oxidation reaction. It is an emission control device which is used in combination to exhaust system of automobiles and lean-burn engines, electronic generators, kerosene heaters, industrial stoves and mining equipment. Their use is directly dependent in response to environmental, or health and safety regulations, by local government. These converters combine carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2) and other hydrocarbons (HC) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) vapor; these are, however, two way convertors. Three way catalytic converters also reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx). As said above, catalytic converters are of two types: 1.Two – way catalytic converter, having two functions: a.Oxidizing carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, and b.Oxidizing hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water vapor. Here hydrocarbons are partially and unburned fuel. Two – way converters are highly used in diesel engines, but they are superseded by three – way converters. 2.Three – way catalytic converters provide additional advantage of controlling emissions of oxides of nitrogen. They serve three tasks: a.Reducing oxides of nitrogen to oxygen and nitrogen, b.Oxidizing carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, and c.Oxidation of hydrocarbons to water vapor and carbon dioxide. Catalytic converters are made up of ceramic monolith, aluminum, titanium, silicon and platinum; in a nutshell –it’s a mix of most precious metals. So when your converter expires, you can go for smelting catalytic converters, and recover some money out of it. These converters are good, as they are proven for reducing pollutant emission at various implementations.
