What you really need to know! A scale gives the relationship between the measurements on the drawing or model and the measurements of the real object.
Example 1: A map has a scale of 1 inch = 8 miles. Two towns are 3.25 inches apart on the map. a. What is the actual distance between the two towns?
1•d = 8•3.25 d = 26 miles
A map has a scale of 1 inch = 8 miles. b. What is the scale factor?
8 miles must be changed to inches! 8 x 63,360 = 506,880
Example 2: A model car is 4 inches long. The actual car is 12 feet long. What is the scale of the model? 1 inch = 3 feet
Example 3: Sheila is designing a patio that is 16 feet long and 14 feet wide. Make a scale drawing of the patio. Use a scale of 0.5 inches = 4 feet.
16 feet long and 14 feet wide. 0.5 inches = 4 feet. L = 2 inches W = 1.75 inches
2 inches 1.75 inches
