What’s different about middle school? • More teachers- (5 classes, lunch and advisory period) • More responsibility • Class transitions, organization, lockers, materials for class • Longer school day- School Hours 9:30 a.m. - 4:10 p.m. • Teams (4) • More options for clubs and activities • No recess • Student Body- 1,050 Students (6th- 374, 7th- 350, 8th- 324) • Bond Mill Elem., Calverton Elem., Vansville Elem, Transfer students
MLK Student Standards and Expectations • Follow uniform guidelines for dress (including PE) • Grade 6 uniform • PE uniform • Bring Supplies to Class • Complete classwork, homework, tests, and projects that are assigned • Maintain excellent behavior by following school rules and policies • Be on time for class • Maintain excellent attendance • Use locker according to school rules
Academic Course Offerings • Science • World Cultures/Geography or U.S. History • Mathematics – Math 6,7,8, Accelerated Math 1, Accelerated Math 2, and Algebra 1 • Language Arts (ELA and ELA Honors) • Reading Enrichment Support • Math Enrichment Support • Introduction to World Languages - Spanish and Chinese (Note: Algebra 1 and Level I, II World Language courses earn high school credit)
Creative Arts Course Offerings • Chorus • Instrumental – Band or Orchestra • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) – Application process • Physical Education and Health required • Fine Arts: Art, General Music/Keyboarding, Dance, • Computational Learning (Technology Class) NOTE: All students are required to take PE; Health and a fine art class each year in middle school.
Student Schedule Students will be scheduled in the following courses every day. • RELA • MATH • SCIENCE Students will be scheduled in the following courses every other day. • SOCIAL STUDIES and the other day will be World LanguageorMath SupportorRDG support. • All Creative Arts courses (examples: PE/Health; Band/PE; Art/AVID; PE/ ART)
