CSCOPE Changes For returning users… LWISD Curriculum Team
Apologies to the experts… Believe one who has proved it. Believe an expert. Virgil, (70 BC – 19 BC), Aeneid
Inner-outer circle • When I say “go,” stand up, hand up, pair up • Partner A is the person whose knees are closest to the floor; the other person is Partner B • Create a large, 2-ring circle with Partner A in the inner ring, facing Partner B • Partner B is in the outer ring • When I say go, turn to your right…walk three steps, turn and face a new partner, but don’t talk to him or her • OK, take a little think time and ponder this question (but, again, don’t talk until I say “go.”) What is one activity your kids loved in CSCOPE last year? • When I say “go,” Partner A shares for 30 seconds; when you hear the timer, switch and Partner B shares for 30 seconds. • Be sure and say, “I am so glad you’re here to share your brilliance with our students!”
Changes for Everyone… • SY 2011-2012 • SY 2010-2011 • First six week’s IFDs, Assessments, and Lessons are up • First semester planned to be up by mid-September • Second semester planned to be up by October
Vertical Alignment Document • Supporting and readiness standards are labeled in color
IFDs • IFDs respond to STAAR/EOC-STAAR by bundling TEKS/SEs • IFDs label supporting and readiness standards in color • Performance Indicators have been reviewed by Jay McTighe and improved • ELPS are numbered in standards section, and written out at the end for reference
Rigor: Proof in the IFD • Specificity Statements in the IFDs tell what the students should be able to do and the level of rigor at which they should do it • Performance Indicators contain two pieces: • Process: what students should do to demonstrate mastery [non-negotiable] • Product: a possible form that process could take [teacher may change the form, e.g. “Write a paragraph showing” could become “Create a pamphlet with at least one paragraph showing..”]
Round Robin: • Everybody on the team stand. • When I say “go,” the team member whose number is called will begin. • Do one complete Round Robin where each member shares one new thing she’s learned about CSCOPE today. • When the Round Robin is complete, everyone sits down. • I’ll give you a moment to think. • The spinner says, _____ starts. “Go!”
ELAR • New, four-column format helps teachers “see” connections among word study, guided reading, independent reading, and writing
Routines are hot-linked to tell teacher how to set up Writer’s Workshop, for example…
Even though each strand is a “separate” mini-lesson, look for connections between parts. They’re there.
Math • Instructional Transition Guide • Use this guide with SY2011-12 Instructional Focus Document, Year-at-a-Glance, and Vertical Alignment Document • The Instructional Transition Guide will direct you to “possible lessons” that meet the specificity in the IFD • Lessons available under SY2010-11
Social Studies • In SY2011-2012: Instructional Focus Documents and Unit Assessments • In SY2010-2011: Lessons • Teachers must adjust lessons to match new Instructional Focus Documents in order to meet TEKS revisions and prepare for STAAR and STAAR/EOC
Science • Lesson organizers for whole lesson, or… • Pieces and parts
Fact or fib… • Get two post-it notes • Write “FACT” on one • Write “FIB” on the other • Place one post-it in each hand with the word “kissing” your hand • Get ready to SLAP!
Fact or fib… • If you want to help your students know what they’re supposed to be learning, you should write the performance indicator on the board. FIB
If you want to remind students about what they’re learning, use… Key Understandings
Fact or fib… • There are no district benchmarks this year… Fact
CSCOPE Unit Assessments will provide formative feedback for you, your principal, and curriculum support team to guide re-teaching. They are required. It is important to keep pace with your team and let your principal know if you are more than 1 week behind your schedule.
