3-D Geometry 2nd grade This PowerPoint provides several activities for exploring 3-D geometry with 2nd graders.
What is Geometry? 2 “geo” - means earth “metry” – means measure “Measurement of the earth”
Big Idea for Geometry 3 Two-dimensional shapes are combined to make three-dimensional shapes
Activity: What’s in the Box? • Have 3-D shapes available: cubes, cones, spheres, cylinders, rectangular prisms, cones • One partner places a shape in the box or sock without the other partner seeing the shape • The other partner feels the shape, without looking, and describes the shape
Activity: Mystery Bag Grab 5 Have 3-D shapes available: cubes, cones, spheres, cylinders, rectangular prisms, cones Place 3-D shapes in a bag Place a matching set of shapes on the table One student reaches into the bag and “grabs” a shape Without removing the shape from the bag, the student describes the shape by attributes
Activity: Tracing Faces • Have 3-D shapes available: cubes and rectangular prisms • Trace each face • Have students relate the shapes of the faces of three-dimensional objects to two-dimensional objects?
Questions • What shape do you have and how do you know? • What are the faces of your shape? • Are any of the faces the congruent? • Are any of the faces the same shape? • Are any of the faces different? • How many faces does your shape have? • Can you draw around each of them?
Activity: Stamping Faces • The teacher chooses several 3-dimensional shapes • On separate pages stamp all the faces of each shape • In a center, students match the faces with the shapes
Activity: Creating 3-D Shapes Use available materials in the classroom to build 3-D shapes.
Activity: Have students make 3-D shapes from 2-D shapes Give students paper copies of shapes such as rectangles, squares, hexagons, etc. They tape them together to make 3-D shapes.
Activity: Sorting PolyhedraAfter students make 3-D shapes, have them sort the shapes. Students can also commercial 3-D shapes. Include boxes in the sorting activity.
Activity: Match Me • This square is one of the faces of a 3-D shape. • What shapes would fit this description?
Geometric Match Me Cards • For each card, decide which three-dimensional shapes match the description. • As you work with a partner think about • the prior knowledge needed for this activity • discussion questions • extensions
