Conversions • To go up the steps, move the decimal to the left the number of steps you are going. • To go down the steps, move the decimal to the right the number of steps you are going.
Volume How much space an object takes up Three types: Regular solids, Liquids, and Irregular solids
Volume of Regular Solids Use the metric side of a ruler! = length x width x height = m x m x m = m3 = cm x cm x cm = cm3
Volume of Liquids • Use graduated cylinder • Read bottom of curve (meniscus) Unit- liter = L (about a quart) • 1 mL = 1 cm3
Volume of Irregular Objects • Use displacement • How much water level increases when dropped in a graduated cylinder • How much space it holds
Mass- amount of matter in the object (how many particles) • Use a triple-beam balance or a scale. • Unit= Gram (about the mass of a paper clip)
Temperature • Use a Celsius Thermometer • Measure in the middle of a liquid • Unit= Degree (C) 100 C- water boils (212 F) 21 C- room temperature (about 72 F) 0 C- water freezes (32 F) -273 C- “absolute zero” (-460 F) Particle motion stops!
