  2. Why be concerned? • Almost all households produce hazardous waste. • Household products contain ingredients: • Threatening to health. • Dangerous for the environment. • Proper use and disposal of hazardous products reduces their danger.

  3. Select Products Carefully • Read the label before purchasing a product. • Look for signal words that indicate possible problems: Caution Warning Danger • Follow the directions on the label. • Choose the least hazardous product for the job.

  4. Purchase Products Wisely • If unused for long periods, containers may become damaged and leak. • Chemicals may change and no longer be effective. • Pesticides may become banned after purchase, making disposal difficult. • Storage problems may result from accumulation of unused products.

  5. Use Products Safely • Follow label directions and warnings. • Take recommended precautions such as: • Increase ventilation. • Use safety goggles and gloves. • Don’t mix products unless you have checked safety precautions first.
