  1. The Algae Invasion Challenge

  2. Scientists are concerned about how many algae blooms are in Puget Sound and how big they are. Puget Sound Bellevue

  3. Algae is plant-like organism (living thing) that lives in the water. It provides food for many other organisms in the food web.

  4. When the amount of algae in an area of water increases quickly, scientists call this an algae bloom.

  5. There are different kinds of algae blooms in Puget Sound, and they can be different colors.

  6. Scientists sometimes fly over them in planes to take pictures and study them.

  7. Algae blooms can cause different problems. One of the problems is that some kinds of algae blooms are toxic- they can make other organisms sick or even kill them. These are called harmful algae blooms, or HABs. In this challenge, we will focus on these harmful algae blooms.

  8. Your challenge has three parts: 1) What is causing harmful algae blooms in Puget Sound? 2) What organisms are at risk because of these harmful algae blooms? Why are they at risk? 3) Educate others: What are some important things the public needs to know about harmful algae blooms?
