Inquiry Reading WICOR - Foundation of AVID • Writing • Inquiry • Collaboration • Organization • Reading
WICOR • Writing is essential to thinking, learning and growth. It promotes higher level thinking skills and helps to clarify. The more fluent the writer, the more successfully one can complete academically rigorous assignments. • Inquiry-focuses on the student as the learner, developing skillful, open-ended questioning skills. Students will be able to recognize different levels of questioning
WICOR • Collaboration - Students internalize what they have studied and learned if they are able to collaborate with others and make connections. • Organization – Planner to notes important dates (tests, quizzes, project, etc…), Binder to keep assignments neatly organized, and Cornell notes – student may take notes on Cornell notepaper, but unless the process is completed it is not Cornell.
WICOR • Reading – is key to understanding in all content areas. Keeping reading as a focus in AVID develops reading comprehension, awareness of the different reasons for reading, and understanding of the different structures of texts.
Why take notes? • Cornell note taking stimulates • critical thinking skills. • Note taking helps students • remember what is said in class. • Cornell notes help students organize • and process data and information. • Cornell notes helps students recall by getting them to process their notes 3 times.

Name Date Class Period Cornell Notes • Use symbols (arrows, circles, underlining) or highlighting to emphasize important ideas and relationships. • Abbrev. & Paraphrase. • Skip lines between ideas. • Within 24 hours, review notes and develop study questions on the left side. • Be aware of teacher clues.* Helpful Hints for Straight A Notes

Write 3 questions and a summary in your own words about the main ideas. • When reviewing your notes, if more questions arise write them in the summary area. What belongs in the bottom space?
