  1. 3rd MPGD workshop at Saga University 26-27, January, 2007 Gas Gain Measurement at Low Pressure with MSTPC Yutaka Mizoi, Suranjan Das Kummer, Tomokazu Fukuda Osaka Electro-Communication University Hironobu Ishiyama, Yutaka Watanabe, Hiroari Miyatake KEK Takashi Hashimoto JAEA

  2. Measurement of RNB reactions near Coulomb Barrier x Astrophysical Nuclear Reactions; (a,n), (p,n), (a,p), (p,a), etc x Sub-barrier Fusion Reactions; Super-Heavy-Element Synthesis Requirements; Gas Target (He, CH4, Ar, Xe, ....), High-Efficient Detection System (limited-Intensity RNB, Neutron Coincidence) Development of MSTPC !

  3. • High detection efficiency (~100%) • Excitation function in the wide energy range •Gas target •dE/dx multiple sampling (MUSIC) • 3D tracking (TPC) GEM Anode wire MSTPCMultiple-Sampling and Tracking Proportional Chamber e- Wire e- GEM 10 years ago, RNB intensity was up to 10kHz, but now, it becomes to be more than 1MHz.

  4. dE/dx dE/dx Pad # Pad # Reaction point determinationusing dE/dx pattern Reactions occur near the top of Bragg curve. Bragg curve should be expanded for better the determination. Expand (1) Smaller pad size; mechanically limited (2) lower gas pressure; Controllable, essentially no limit We should know ‘gas-gain dependences on gas pressure’.

  5. Gas-Gain Measurement Collimated a-source (241Am, Ea=5.5MeV); Energy loss in the active area are calculated. Amount of prompt charge is calculated. Triple GEM Single GEM

  6. Results 1Triple GEM We need not high gas gain.

  7. Results 2Single GEM Single GEM is better for our purpose.

  8. Results 3-1Pressure Scaling X axis; V/Pd Y axis; lnM/Pd V; GEM voltage (V) M; Gas gain P; Pressure (MPa) d; GEM Thickness (cm)

  9. Results 3-2Pressure Scaling X axis; V/Pd Y axis; lnM/Pd V; GEM voltage (V) M; Gas gain P; Pressure (MPa) d; GEM Thickness (cm)
