  2. Early Life, East and West • On theory about how early peoples migrated from Asia to the Americas is that they walked across a land bridge. • One theory about why early peoples migrated from Asia to the Americas was that they were hunters following animals.

  3. Early Life, East and West • During the Ice Age, early Americans got food by hunting animals. • Most early people lived wherever food was found during the Ice Age.

  4. Early Life, East and West • When the large animals died out during the Ice Age, people became hunter-gathers. • The effect of agriculture on the way of life of the early peoples was that they settled in one place.

  5. Early Life, East and West • One purpose of the mounds built by the Mound Builders was that the mounds were burial places for important chiefs. • The Mound Builders were able to build enormous structures because they were well organized.

  6. Early Life, East and West • The Anasazi were the first to use irrigations in what is now the United States; grew corn, squash, beans, and pumpkins; and were know as the “Cliff Dwellers.”

  9. Early Life, East and West • The result of the Mayan study of the movements of the sun, moon, stars, and planets was and extremely accurate calendar. • The Aztec go more land for farming by creating floating gardens, carving terraces into hillsides, and developing irrigation systems.

  10. Early Life, East and West • The Aztecs extended their boarders to reach the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans by conquering other peoples in the valley of Mexico.
