What is a life cycle? • stages of development of living organism: the series of changes of form and activity that a living organism undergoes from its beginning through its development to sexual maturity • all stages of development: the complete process of change and development during somebody's lifetime or during the useful life of something such as an organization, institution, or manufactured product
What are the advantages of having this life cycle • It helps them with having more of them around so they can survive for longer. After mating, the female lays her eggs in warm, moist sand following a rainy spell. She pushes her abdomen down into the sand, extending the membranes between the segments, and burrowing to a depth of 50 or 60 mm. In this burrow, 50 to 100 eggs are laid and mixed with a frothy fluid, which hardens slightly and may help to maintain an air supply round the eggs. In 10 to 20 days depending on temperature and moisture, the eggs hatch and the nymphs make their way to the surface and emerge as ‘hoppers’ (like miniature adults but wingless at this stage).
