  1. Mathematics 2Ms. Meek Addition Word Problems

  2. Word Problems Often times, math problems are made up of more than just numbers. When words are a part of the problem, we must understand what we are being asked to do with the numbers to solve the problem.

  3. Word Problems It is not always easy to see which operation should be used with the numbers in the word problem. With careful reading, and by identifying some key words, we can determine which operation to use.

  4. Addition Word Problems What is happening to the numbers in an addition problem? Two or more smaller amounts are combined together to get a larger total amount. There is some amount to start with, and some more is added to it. We often call addition word problems “some, some more” problems.

  5. Addition Word Problems Words that indicate addition: • sum • altogether • together • total • in all • add

  6. Solving a Word Problem When solving a word problem, there are several steps: • Read the problem carefully. • Underline important words that help to indicate what operation should be used. • Identify and write out the numbers needed to solve the problem. • Use pencil and paper to work out the answer.

  7. Solving a Word Problem Example: Marla, Berkeley, and Ryan each buy a bag of jelly beans. Marla’s bag has 57 jelly beans in it. Berkeley’s bag had 34 jelly beans. Ryan’s bag has 45 jelly beans in it. What is the total number of jelly beans they had?

  8. Solving a Word Problem Example: Marla, Berkeley, and Ryan each buy a bag of jelly beans. Marla’s bag has 57 jelly beans in it. Berkeley’s bag had 34 jelly beans. Ryan’s bag has 45 jelly beans in it. What is the totalnumber of jelly beans they had?

  10. 57 + 34 =91 91 + 45 = 136 136 Jelly Beans

  11. Solving a Word Problem Example: Tyler, Chris, and Aliyah collect stickers. Tyler has 67 stickers. Chris has 62 stickers. Aliyah has 43 stickers. How many stickers did they have in all?

  12. Solving a Word Problem Example: Tyler, Chris, and Aliyah collect stickers. Tyler has 67 stickers. Chris has 62 stickers. Aliyah has 43 stickers. How many stickers did they have in all?

  13. Solving a Word Problem Example: Tyler, Chris, and Aliyah collect stickers. Tyler has 67 stickers. Chris has 62stickers. Aliyah has 43stickers. How many stickers did they have in all?

  14. Solving a Word Problem Example: Tyler, Chris, and Aliyah collect stickers. Tyler has 67 stickers. Chris has 62stickers. Aliyah has 43stickers. How many stickers did they have in all? 67 + 62 = 129129 + 43 = 172 172 Stickers

  15. Conclusion When an addition problem is written in words, it can be difficult to know which operation should be used to solve. To solve follow these steps: • Read the problem carefully. • Underline important words. • Identify and write out the numbers needed to solve the problem. • Use pencil and paper to work out the answer.
