  2. Word Problems Often times, math problems are made up of more than just numbers. When words are a part of the problem, we must understand what we are being asked to do with the numbers to solve the problem.

  3. Word Problems It is not always easy to see which operation should be used with the numbers in the word problem. With careful reading, and by identifying some key words, we can determine which operation to use.

  4. Addition Word Problems What is happening to the numbers in an addition problem? Two or more smaller amounts are combined together to get a larger total amount. There is some amount to start with, and some more is added to it. We often call addition word problems “some, some more” problems.

Solving a Word Problem When solving a word problem, there are several steps: • Read the problem carefully. • Underline important words that help to indicate what operation should be used. • Identify and write out the numbers needed to solve the problem. • Use pencil and paper to work out the answer.
