  2. Understanding Even and Odd Every number, no matter how large, is either an even number or an odd number. We determine this, by looking at the digit in the ones place of a number. We also know that even and odd numbers alternate.

  3. Even Numbers In order to be classified as an even number, the number must have one of the following numbers in the ones place: 0,2,4,6,or 8

  4. Odd Numbers In order to be classified as an odd number, the number must have one of the following numbers in the ones place: 1,3,5,7,or 9

  5. Additional Information About Evens and Odds Even numbers can always be split evenly. There is nothing left over when split into two equal groups. For example: 16 is an even number. It has a 6 in the ones place. 16 can be split into two equal groups.

  6. Additional Information About Evens and Odds Odd numbers cannot be split evenly. You cannot make equal groups. There is always one left over. For example: 17 is an odd number. It has a 7 in the ones place. 17 cannot be split into equal groups. *

  7. Even or Odd? • 27 What number is in the ones place? 7 If a number ends in 1,3,5,7, or 9, then it is odd. • 44 What number is in the ones place? 4 If a number ends in 0,2,4,6, or 8, then it is even.
