2. Author’s Purpose When good readers… identify the reason an author writes, the reader identifies the author’s purpose. There are three main reasons an author writes a selection.

3. To Entertain: When an author writes a passage for the reader to enjoy, the author writes to entertain.

4. To Entertain: Usually stories that are fiction or make-believe are written to entertain. Most Reading children’s stories are written to entertain.

5. Teach or Inform When an author writes a passage to help the reader learn something, the author writes to teach or inform.

6. Teach or Inform Many selections are written to teach or inform. Textbooks, magazines, and newspapers are examples of selections that can help us learn. Recipes and how-to’s are another kind of selection that can help us learn.

7. Persuade When an author writes a passage to convince the reader, the author writes to persuade. Advertisements and commercials are written to persuade.

8. What is the Author’s Purpose? “A Flea and the Fly” A flea and a fly in a flue Were caught, so what could they do? Said the fly, “Let us flee.” “Let us fly,” said the flea So they flew through a flaw in the flue. To Entertain!

9. What is the Author’s Purpose? “Busy Otters” Otters are small animals, but they have to eat a lot. This is because they are very busy. Otters know how to dig and swim well. An otter can swim under water for eight minutes! Otters can run quickly. They are able to catch lots of bugs. Otters are also good at catching fish. Otters do many things! To teach or inform!
