  2. Poverty in Brazil is most visually represented by the various favelas, slums in the country's metropolitan areas and remote upcountry regions that suffer with economic underdevelopment and below-par standards of living. Rapid economic development and poverty in Brazil

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva • An attempt to mitigate these problems is the "Fome Zero" hunger-eradication program implemented by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2003. • Part of this is "Bolsa Família,"a major anti-poverty program that gives money directly to impoverished families so as to keep their children in school.

Dilma Rousseff Dilma Rousseff, country’s new president, is hoping to uplift as she pursues an ambitious goal Government officials say that in the coming weeks Rousseff will lay out details of a broad initiative, “Brazil Without Poverty,” which will expand health, education and cash-transfer programs and direct increased development aid to poverty-stricken regions.

What is currently being done • Deforestation in the Amazon • Trying to reduce poverty and eliminate extreme poverty especially in the northeast region of Brazil • Bolsa Familia is a program in brazil and it is reducing poverty by paying the poor • Child labor • The Fundação Esperança is a nonprofit organization in brazil and it provides health and education for the people who live in the Amazon for longer than 40 years.

What is currently being done (continued) • The Pastoral do Menor is a nonprofit is a Brazilian nongovernment organization campaigns for children’s rights, it allows the people to take courses in carpentry, jewelry making, singing, sports and other activities. • APAE is a association of the parents and friends of exceptionals and it helps people with disabilities, people who are physically or mentally disabled, and it provides education and health for them.

How does the issue affect the culture of Latin America??? • Brazil is a vast melting pot • Migration – people from other countries migrate to brazil to get jobs and then they get married to people who are from Latin America or brazil. • Violence and criminal acts • How people see and shape poverty
