  1. School attendance strategies: Results of a survey of Queensland state school leaders April 2016

What was the survey about? • In April/May 2015, 287 Queenslandstate schools were invited to participate in a survey on school attendance strategies • Response rate was 157 (= 55%) • The survey included questions from a 2012 Queensland Audit Office school attendance survey to show trends over time

  3. Why is school attendance important? • Attendance is a key measure of students’ learning engagement • Research confirms a strong positive link between school attendance and student outcomes • On any given day, nine per cent of Queensland’s state school students are absent from school • Low attendance can lead to poor academic results and lower lifetime income

Results summary • A wide variety of attendance strategies, procedures and approaches are used by school leaders • Most strategies are perceived as having a slight to moderate impact • Primary and secondary school leaders sometimes deploy different strategies • Schools with higher attendance rates more frequently perceive their strategies as having a greater impact • Schools with lower attendance rates typically report having attempted a greater number of strategies • Compared to 2012, a greater percentage of school leaders said they regularly: • generate reports on patterns and trends of attendance • analyse their data to identify absenteeism patterns and trends • consistently follow up on unexplained absences

Conclusion The department has an ongoing programto promote attendance: • School Improvement Unit reviews of schools incorporate a headline indicator on attendance rates • The department’s Annual Report includes information about student attendance levels • Every Day Counts web resources are being enhanced to target parents of primary school students and those starting secondary school • A sample evaluation plan and template have been developed by the department to support schools to evaluate their attendance strategies
