C H I N A • The Japanese invasion in World War II and a corrupt, inefficient government resulted in the Chinese Revolution in 1949 • This removed the Republic of China and replaced it with the People’s Republic of China • Which is not a republic

China’s one child policy • Parents must pick up a birth certificate for their child before it is born • Families with one child receive benefits

JAPAN • Is also a part of the Ring of Fire • Japan was never colonized by the west • Trade was prohibited with western countries until the 1850’s • Japan modernized and industrialized very fast
JAPAN’S EMPIRE • Japan quickly took control of Korea, Manchuria (in China), Taiwan, and took control of parts of Russia • Japan’s goal was to become the dominant power in East Asia • Push out Europeans and Americans
