The Lesson: Standard: Students will identify similarities and differences between two main characters of two separate text pieces. When I created this lesson I needed my students to look at comparisons between two different characters. I am sick of doing the same compare and contrast Venn diagram that I have done for years. Instead, I wanted them to focus on the steps that the characters had taken that got them to the point in the story where they had to be the main benefactor of the family. This led me to thinking about “steps.” I had them create legs for each character. The following page shows their assignment.
How does the character deal with the loss of his parent? Student Directions Students answer the questions in each section of the leg, while providing text evidence for each part. The background will demonstrate the setting and anything that might have affected that character in the process of their story. What will happen to the character following the loss of the parent? How does the character deal with the loss of his parent? Background: Name of Character How does the character deal with the loss of his parent? What event(s) occurred that led to the character being the head of the family?
