How can ESL students effectively be taught at the same rate as native English speakers during elementary school? • My goal for this presentation • ESL • ELL • ESL=ELL
What Do You Know? • What do you think the problem is? • Why should you care? • What is your solution to this problem?
The Problem • Public schools in America teach a curriculum that is directed towards kids that know English as their first language. • About half of all Hispanic students are considered ESL. • Not all kids receive an equal education.

Recap • How did this experiment make you feel? • Could you imagine a kid in elementary school going through the same situation?
Learning English • The most significant variable in how long it takes to learn English is the amount of formal schooling students have received in their first language. http://web1.d25.k12.id.us/home/fms/School_House.jpg 2-21-11
Learning English Cont. • Students speaking Spanish learned at English at the same rate as students from an Asian background. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.33ff.com/flags/XL_flags/China_flag.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.33ff.com/flags/worldflags/China_flag.html&usg=__9_U33oHvC_m4TTepmScrj8sXBCM=&h=240&w=360&sz=4&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=4Pr61MpVZq-31M:&tbnh=135&tbnw=203&ei=m4ZsTfvBOJOCsQPW7Ym4BQ&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dchinese%2Bflag%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1235%26bih%3D690%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=929&vpy=153&dur=310&hovh=141&hovw=211&tx=94&ty=99&oei=iIZsTaSJF4KcsQOf8fmpBQ&page=1&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:0 2-28-11 http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/graphics/flags/large/mx-lgflag.gif&imgrefurl=https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/mx.html&usg=__xHoVAt3R0pZyUFH0EE3vqwubMsw=&h=302&w=604&sz=10&hl=en&start=3&zoom=1&tbnid=NQGniZpmazJi3M:&tbnh=68&tbnw=135&ei=SP9rTYqoN5GosQP36umoBA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmexico%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26biw%3D1235%26bih%3D690%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1 2-28-11
Culture Shock • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRlZERL3uHs
Overview • After watching this video, has your outlook on ESL students changed? Why or why not? • By having this type of cultural exchange, is each culture weakening or growing stronger? • What can be done to encourage this type of cultural exchange?
Portland Public Schools • 47% of students were deemed proficient in 2006, but that dropped to 32 % in 2008 (Anderson). • The district has not met their state target of 50% in the past three years (Anderson). http://blog.oregonlive.com/opinion_impact/2008/07/Marta.Guembes.jpg 2-17-11
Whitman Elementary School • “The school board made it very clear in (a recent) student achievement committee meeting that they want a 30-day plan, 60-day plan, 90-day plan and year-long plan of how to turn the ESL program around. It’s very high priority” (Anderson). http://www.tacoma.k12.wa.us/information/departments/planningconstruction/PublishingImages/WhitmanFrontPage.jpg 2-18-11
Whitman Elementary Cont. • “You have to take the families as a whole unit. Are their parents undocumented? Is it hard for their parents to find meaningful, living wage work? Do they have enough to eat? Are they homeless? Are their lights on? When you can stabilize those factors for families, kids do better in school Language is just an additional barrier.” says Mary Krogh (Anderson). http://therightbraininitiative.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/rbi-whitman-100525-00601.jpg 2-21-11
Vose Elementary 91 different languages are spoken in the Beaverton school district in Oregon (Larson). Dual-language program. http://blog.oregonlive.com/washingtoncounty/2008/10/COLL04.JPG 2-21-11
Dual-Language System • A dual-language program is an academic instruction that is divided equally between two languages. http://www.hufsd.edu/assets/images/academics_photos/archived/2007/fl_dual_lang_2.JPG 2-21-11
Co-teaching • Teach and Write • Parallel Teaching • Alternative Teaching • Team Teaching • Lead and Support http://aimsnetwork.org/files/files/Featured_Schools/GCMS/GCMS__Co-teaching.jpg 2-21-11
Activity • What program would you choose to teach ESL students, VoseElementary’s dual-language program, Whitman Elementary’s creative scheduling, co-teaching, or if you don’t agree with any of these you can make up your own?
My Opinion • I personally think that the dual-language program is the best option, because it allows each student to receive an equal opportunity to learn.
