  1. Requirements Specification for “Stories from Keating’s History of Ireland”

  2. Part 1 Personas

  3. KEY GOALS • To be entertained as well as educated • To read the book at her own pace • To not be distracted from the content CaoimheCoghlanThe Savvy Young User“I need quick access to content that looks good” “I recently moved back home with my parents, which is not ideal but was necessary to save money for the future. I’m quite thrifty, as a result and I only ever download free apps. I’m willing to spend more if I feel the app is worthwhile but even at that I usually don’t spend more than €0.79. I will admit I’ve been successfully tempted by visually appealing apps like Beatwave, CamWow and Khoya, which are all very colourful.” “While I’m not familiar with this book I could be tempted by something that gave a unique experience, or if a friend recommended it. I’d like to be able to bookmark pages so I could come back later. I’d expect the same functionality to be available across the 3 language options, so no one misses out. If the content is clear, visual and uncluttered, then you’re onto a winner. It should provide a new type of reading experience and shouldn’t FEEL educational.” • KEY CHARACTERISTICS • Age 25, Single, living at home • Social worker earning €25,000 • Studying for her PhD • Confident with technology • Avid reader • Fluent Irish speaker • Owns iPhone but not iPad • Mostly uses social networking, news and camera apps • Cost and functionality influence her app choices • She is not familiar with the book but is interested

  4. KEY GOALS • To be educated • To adjust the book’s settings to his needs • To be able to easily navigate through the book David WhiteThe Traditional User“I just need a book on-the-go” “I don’t currently own an iPad but I wouldn’t be opposed to getting one in the future, I suppose. At the moment I enjoy using my iPhone but I rarely download new apps unless they really interest me or have some very interesting functionality. I’ve never actually spent a penny on an app, to date, which at least pleases my wife as we’re expecting our first child” “I did Business & Irish as my undergrad so I’m genuinely interested in the potential of this app. My Irish isn’t actually great, but I would attribute that to a lack of interesting learning aids for Irish while I was studying. I like the idea of an entertaining and educational app, but where the reader would be able to choose that for themselves. I personally enjoy the book experience of turning pages, straight blocks of text, etc. Thinking back on my own days of study, I think a grammatical glossary would be essential in this app” • KEY CHARACTERISTICS • Age 34, Married • Teaching Assistant in the School of Business, UCC • Earning €30,000+ • Has a Masters Degree • Confident with technology • Avid reader • Has basic Irish • Owns iPhone but not iPad • Uses bank, weather, travel, twitter, PDF apps • Functionality influences his app choices • He has heard of the book but has not read it

  5. KEY GOALS • To be entertained • To be sure the language is accurate • To experience something completely new and modern Sean PhelanThe Modern Academic“I just need a book on-the-go” “Some of my friends think I was born too soon because I have such a hunger for new technology. If I’m not glued to my iPhone, I’m glued to my iPad. I regularly download new apps, most of which I never use again. I mostly download free apps but I have spent a few euro on some worthy apps in the past.” “I’m a lecturer in Irish but I haven’t actually read Keating’s History because I mostly cover modern literature. I honestly find the idea very exciting though. I would love to see a modern treatment of the book with some references to the older styles of artwork. I would love to see something that gives me a whole new reading experience, not just the static old digital book format. It needs to engage the reader in a new way. It should certainly include grammatical aids for interested users and it’s essential that the translations are accurate, I wouldn’t download it if they weren’t.” • KEY CHARACTERISTICS • Age 52, Married • Lecturer in Irish, NUI Galway • Earning €30,000+ • Has a PhD • Confident with technology • Avid reader • Has fluent Irish • Owns an iPad and an iPhone • Uses social networking, mail, youtube, blogs, some games • Functionality influences his app choices • He has heard of the book but has not read it

  6. Part 2 User Needs

  7. 56% • of people chose functionality as the key influence when downloading apps, over cost, visual appeal and even content

  8. 50% • of people are familiar with the book but even those who have read it have had difficulties with it

  9. 54% • have enough Irish to be able to engage with the Irish language content and with 86% of people interested in the idea the multilingual options should satisfy all user needs

  10. 70% • of users would like a new interactive book experience. Those who would rather greater fidelity to the book experience are mostly older users, though not exclusively

  11. 90% • of users were in favour of the inclusion of a grammatical glossary

  12. “Old Irish/English translation, Should work on any version of iPad/iPhone. Simple gestures to move pages.Simple menu and navigation. Celtic Old Irish art style” • “I'd like it to be pretty to play with and read and be smart, to remember where I've left off, to allow me to click on words in old Irish and allow it to show me the modern Irish and English of the word, and same with phrases. Nice music” • “Mainly linear progression through the stories. Swipable/turnable pages. Colourful, heavy emphasis on illustration. Scaled-down Book-of-Kells style of design.” • “Translations perfect, Be able to see the original document text layout etc, Style – modern, Functionality - jump between old and new quickly & easily, Usability - obvious navigation” • “I would assume the English and Modern Irish versions would have the most up-to-date translation of the content. I would expect the content delivery not to be overly flashy, in a way that might take away from the content.”

  13. “Ditch any text book style, the method used to teach the Irish language has killed the passion that people could have for it.”
