Jean Piaget (1896-1980) • Born in Switzerland • Biologist & psychologist • Many conclusions based on observations of own kids
Theory of Cognitive Development: Why is it important? • Focused on mental processes (perceiving, remembering, believing, & reasoning) which allows for emotional development • Presents “comprehensive picture of child development” when combined w/ Freud, Erikson, etc.
Theory of Cognitive Development: What are some fundamental concepts? • Intelligence viewed as the ability to deal w/ changing world • We all progress through set stages although we may go through them at different rates • Child learns by doing and experiencing, not just observing
How does learning occur? • Through adaptation: • Assimilation-Taking in new info. & fitting it into preconceived notions of the world Ex: Baby tries to drink milk from rattle • Accommodation-Revising old info. to fit new info. Ex: Baby discovers that rattle only makes noise and no longer tries to drink from it
