  2. background • uganda: high maternal mortality rate • main complications: placenta previa, breech presentation, & multiple fetuses • ultrasound imaging can detect these complications • we are developing (with Dr. Rob Nathan) a portable ultrasound machine specifically for midwives, who are central to ugandan communities

  3. research & design process

  4. hardware • lenovo ideapad s10-3t • touch screen • interson AB 3.5 MHz ultrasound probe • donated • SDK provided by interson • very minimal, however • DLL written in C++ which encapsulates functions necessary to interface with probe

  5. user interface • originally written in LabVIEW • couldn't interface with DLLs  • switched to C# 2 weeks ago • no problems encountered • features and workflow refined after meeting with Nicole Goldsmith, ultrasound technician • ready for usability testing!

  7. evaluation plans • short term: • 2nd evaluation of features & workflow by UW ultrasound technician Nicole Goldsmith • usability evaluation by 2 local midwives: • both have experience working in international, resource-constrained environments (Vanuatu & Haiti) • long term:  • usability evaluation in Uganda

  8. challenges • hardware interface • unfamiliarity with tools involved • C • sdk itself • Windows API • labVIEW • couldn't interface with our libraries properly • C# works great!

  9. future work • user testing in uganda • platform-independent software • patient data system • more comprehensive help system
