So What’s the Big Idea? • Artists are often inspired by nature when creating an art work. Such is the case with Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises (1889). • Artists have different ideas and different ways to express them—this is perfectly okay in art, and encouraged!
Essential Questions: • What types of emotions might nature cause you to feel? • How might you show this in an art work? • Is it okay for your artwork to be different than a classmate’s? Why or why not?
Lesson Objectives: • Students will use technology and the Feldman Method to introduce them to the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh. • Students will incorporate three areas of space within their individual artwork: foreground, middle-ground, and background. • Students will use analogous colors of tempera paint and the side of their hand to print expressive iris flowers. • Students will create an independently painted collage, rich in color and emotion, that incorporates characteristics of Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises painting. • Students will work collaboratively using a variety of objects to print, stamp, and add designs to create a Van Gogh-inspired bookcase. • Demonstrate elements of SEL as they work both individually and collaboratively on an art activity.
Important Art Vocabulary: • Analogous Colors: Any two or more colors that are next to each other on the color wheel and are closely related. For example, blue, blue-green, and green all have the color blue in common. • Foreground: Part of the art work that is closest to the viewer. • Middle-ground: Part of the art work that is between the foreground and the background. • Background: Part of the art work that is furthest from the viewer. • Print:A print is a shape or mark made from a block or plate or other object that is covered with wet color (usually ink) and then pressed onto a flatsurface, such as paper or textile. • Collage: A picture or design created by adheringflatthings as newspaper, wallpaper, printedtext, photographs, cloth, string, etc., to a flat surface.
SEL Application/Survey: • Name some important things to remember when working either alone, or together, on an art project. • Why is it okay for each of us to have different ideas? • How might you show respect to yourself and others when working as a class or in small groups? • What are some ways to direct not so good (or negative) behaviors into good (or positive) behaviors? • Did you enjoy working more on your individual project or your collaborative project? Did you enjoy them both the same? • Would you like to work together again on a project like this one? If so, do you have any ideas or suggestions for next year?
Formative Assessment: • Did you enjoy going to the Computer Lab to begin learning about Vincent Van Gogh? Why or why not? • Name a part of your art work that is in the foreground. Name a part of your art work that is in the middle-ground. Name a part of your art work that is in the background. • Why are the colors of paint you are using called analogous colors? Can you name a different group of analogous colors? • What is a collage? Describe how your Irises collage is likeVan Gogh’s. How is it different?
