Contents • Paragraph • 3 Types of Sentences - Topic Sentence (★) - Supporting Sentence - Concluding Sentence
Paragraph • What is Paragraph? : A group of related sentences about a single topic
English English borrows lots of words from other languages. For example, English speakers often say adios, which is Spanish for goodbye. English speakers also use words borrowed from French, beef and pork to describe cow and pig meat. Korean also borrows words from English like bus and orange juice. Problem – Topic is ‘English’ in the paragraph but last sentence is about a new topic ‘Korean’. It is not right to put two different topics in a paragraph.
Topic Sentence • Two main ‘jobs’ of topic sentence: • Names the topic • Gives the controlling idea1 1 Controlling idea tells what the paragraph will say about the topic
Good Topic Sentences Brown = Topic Blue = Controlling idea • Sejong University has many students from other countries. • Sejong University has many talented students from many different majors. • There is a variety of students in Sejong University.
Bad Topic Sentences Red = Topic Blue = Controlling idea • Sejong University is close to Children Grand Park. • Sejong Universityis located in Gwangjin-gu. • The foundation and history of Sejong University. Topic 1 Topic 2 Topic 1 Topic 2 Very long topic(acceptable) but has NOcontrolling idea
