Early Years Foundation Stage Is it: • preparation for school? • preparation for life? • both?
Principles make it clear it’s both Theme: A Unique Child Principle : Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured Theme: Positive Relationships Principle: Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person. Theme: Learning and Development Principle: Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected. Theme: Enabling Environments Principle: The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning.
Why phonics? Rose report concluded that phonics should be the main approach for teaching early reading.
What is high quality phonics? • Understanding what appropriate skills and knowledge a child should learn • Giving children the opportunity to apply developing skills in interesting ‘play’ activities • In line with EYFS principles • [6 phases] but must be completely secure with phase 1 – APPLIES TO VAST MAJORITY OF CHILDREN IN SETTINGS
High Quality phonics is not: • Galloping through a scheme as quickly as possible to tick boxes • Handwriting practice • ‘Letter’ worksheets
Phase 1 • Tuning into sounds • Listening and remembering sound • Talking about sounds • Begin to develop skills to blend and segment orally • NO RECOGNITION OF LETTERS
What are we doing? • Audit – what are strengths / areas for development • Training – centrally based, setting based- the audit will inform what these are
