  1. Dr. Tim Grundl Groundwater Geochemist UWM School of Freshwater Sciences and Geosciences Department USGS

  2. Research • Interests Use of trace elements, noble gases, and stable isotopes to understand groundwater systems with a current focus on aquifers and contaminants in WI • Projects • Interaction of the Pleistocene glaciation with the underlying aquifer in eastern Wisconsin • Riverbank filtration in shallow aquifer recharge • Development of an in situ probe to precisely identify contaminants in sediment

  3. A Day in the Life… • Geosciences Department and School of Freshwater Sciences • Teaches classes • Mentors Geology, Engineering, Conservation and Environmental Science, and Freshwater Science Students • Currently developing an in situ X-ray probe to better measure containments in sediment • Collaboration with AREVA, one of largest company dealing in uranium exploration , mining , and remediation

  4. Impact and Importance • Groundwater is often “out of sight and out of mind” • Better understanding of aquifer dynamics and emerging containments • Resolve groundwater policy issues • More precise measurement of contaminants in sediment Klump, S., Grundl, T., Purtschert, R., & Kipfer, R. (2008). Groundwater and climate dynamics derived from noble gas, 14C, and stable isotope data. Geology, 36(5), 395-398.
