Cisgender • One whom identifies with the sex and gender they were assigned at birth • Ex: • Biologically male individual that is comfortable identifying as a male • Biologically female individual that is comfortable identifying as a female
Transgender vs Transsexual • Transgender: an individual whom identifies with the gender opposite of the one they were assigned at birth • Transsexual: a trans* individual whom goes through surgery to be assigned to another sex • Male-to-Female (MTF): a biologically male individual whom strongly identifies as a female • Female-to-Male (FTM): a biologically female individual whom strongly identifies as a male • 0.3% of the US population
Trans* Umbrella • Genderqueer: identifying as any gender in between the gender-binary system • Androgynous: appearing with or indentifying as both male and female characteristics • Genderfluid: switching between any gender-binary or gender non-binary identities in a given time frame (depends on individual) • Bi-gender: indentifying with any combination of two gender-binary or non-binary gender identities • Tri-gender: indentifying with any combination of three gender-binary or non-binary gender identities • Agender: a lack of gender
Two-Sprit • Common amongst those of Native-American ancestry • Two-spirits occupying one body • Display qualities of both gender-binary genders • Two contrasting animal or human spirits
Trans vs Trans* • Trans: term used specifically for transgender and/or transsexual individuals • Trans*: term used to include all gender non-conforming individuals
Pronouns • PGPs/AGPs: pronouns reflecting the gender you want to be seen/referred to as (if you don’t know, refer to them with neutral pronouns, or ask!!) • Misgender: referring to someone using PGPs/AGAs they do not want to be seen/referred to as • Dysphoria: extreme unsatisfactory feeling of your gender identity (through personal feelings, someone else’s comments, or bullying)
