Spain was the first modern European Power • Wearing two crowns • Charles V was Queen Isabella’s grandson • Inherited the crown of Spain • Was also heir to the Austrian Hapsburgs
An Empire Divided • Exhausted and disillusioned, Charles gave up his titles and entered a monastery • His brother, Ferdinand, received the Hapsburg lands in central Europe • His son, Philip, received Spain, southern Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain’s overseas empire
Philip II and Divine Right • A hard-working leader who devoted much time to government work • Strengthened the Catholic Church • Used the Inquisition against Protestants • Ruled with absolute power • Believed his power came directly from God
Conflict with England • Queen Elizabeth supported the Dutch • England plundered Spanish ships and looted Spanish cities in the Americas • The Spanish Armada invaded England • But a storm scattered the Spanish fleet and the faster English ships won
Economic Decline • American gold made Spain a great power, but in the 1600s, it’s power began to fade • Lack of strong leadership • Costly wars • Interest in Americans caused neglect at home • Taxes and inflation increased • By 1700 France replaced Spain as the most powerful European nation
