  2. The Harding Presidency • Republican Warren G. Harding becomes president and promises Americans a return to normalcy • The word “normalcy” was reassuring to those Americans who wanted an end to foreign involvement and domestic turmoil • Harding and Coolidge won by a landslide

  3. The “Ohio Gang” • Harding gave jobs in the white house to help his friends he also gave jobs to his political supporters known as the Ohio Gang • Many of the people he appointed were unqualified and some turned out to be corrupt

  4. Teapot Dome Scandal • The biggest scandal involved Albert Fall • He secretly leased government oil reserves in Teapot Dome, Wy to the owners of two oil companies in exchange for 400,000 dollars • Fall was convicted of bribery and sent to prison becoming the first cabinet officer ever to go to jail • Harding went to escape the stresses of the scandals by taking a trip to the west and became ill, suffered a heart attack and died

  5. Honesty Returns to the White House • Coolidge had a reputation for honesty • He allowed the investigations into the Harding Administration to proceed without interfering • He replaced the remaining members of the Ohio Gang with honest officials • Coolidge believed that the government should not interfere in the life of the nation

  6. A New Term • Coolidge swept the 1924 Presidential Election • Also in 1924, for the first time women, Nellie Taylor Ross and Miriam Ferguson won governor’s races

  7. Foreign Policy • Coolidge favored a limited role of the nation in world affairs • Coolidge promised the US that he would not lead them into the League of Nations • Many Americans supported this policy of isolationism (non-involvement in world affairs)

  8. Promoting Peace • The US, Great Britain, and Japan had begun a Naval Arms Race • The three nations along with France and Italy signed the Five Power Treaty to limit the size of the nations’ navies • The treaty marked the first time in world history that world powers agreed to disarm • The US also signed the Kellogg Briand Pact which called for outlawing war Within a few years, 48 other nations had signed the pact but it was often not enforced

  9. A More Unfriendly Neighbor • When Harding took office the US was stationed in Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua • Relations with Mexico were also tense • After the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua held elections in the mid 1920’s the US withdrew their troops • At about the same time Mexico threatened to take over foreign owned oil and mining companies. Coolidge chose to negotiate instead and the US reached a settlement with Mexico
