Project MedHealth Pediatric Education and Development Society
Project MedHealth This is a program in health education created and organized by dedicated students at Boston University School of Medicine. It aims to educate children about key health issues in the 21st century to guide them toward developing healthy lifestyles.
Objectives • Educate youth about age-appropriate health issues • Create interest in health maintenance and science among younger generations • Empower medical students to make a difference in the lives of children • Build a strong partnership between Boston University School of Medicine and local public schools
Overview • Work with Boston Public Schools • Small group style teaching • Workshops are based upon an evidence-based curriculum: The Great Body Shop or Glencoe Health (according to grade level) • Grades 4-8 • Topics may include: human body, growth and development, illness, nutrition, physical fitness, safety, violence prevention, substance use, relationships, sexual behaviors, and/or bullying. • Ask for a 1 or 2 afternoon commitment
The teaching day • Pick up supplies and curriculum • West Roxbury School • Usually 4 teachers per day • Check in with school nurse • Kids broken out into gender groups • Principalor nurse will be in the room with you. • Small group discussion • Check out
Training • Mid-October (TBA) • Teachers’ responsibilities, schools’ responsibilities, and logistics • How to teach / Tips and tricks • Reimbursement for cab fare (possible zipcar solution) • Begin signing up for afternoon sessions
