  1. Earth’s Changes How Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Landslides Change the Earth’s Surface

  2. Mt. St. Helens Before

  3. Mt. St. Helens After

  4. Some Processes that Change the Earth Volcano Landslide Earthquake

  5. Volcanoes Change the Earth Volcanic activity is one of the many ways that the Earth’s surface changes over time.

  6. Volcanoes Change the Earth Volcanoes change the surface of the Earth by erupting matter from inside the Earth.

  7. Changing the Earth’s Surface In most places, the Earth changes very, very slowly.

  8. Changing the Earth’s Surface This change can also happen rapidly and violently.

  9. Earth Changes Can Look Different Change caused by lava flow with steam, cinder, pumice, and ash Change caused by lava flow Change caused by cinder, pumice, and ash explosions

  10. Earthquakes Change the Earth Earthquakesare another way the surface of the Earth changes. They cause the Earth’s surface to shake, roll, and heave.

  11. Earth Changes Can Look Different Earthquakes can leave a scarp, a visible cut in the earth. Earthquakes can cause damage in populated areas. Earthquakes under the ocean can cause tsunamis.

  12. Landslides Change the Earth Landslides make changes to the Earth, too. They cause rocks, soil, and debris to suddenly slide down a slope.

  13. Earth Changes Can Look Different Rock breaking away from a hillside Earthquakes cause some landslides. Landslide caused by water-soaked soil

  14. Earth Changes Can Look Different These pictures show the same road. What earth changes do you observe in each picture? What inferences can you make about the causes of each change?

  15. What three processes change the Earth’s surface? Volcano Landslide Earthquake

Credits • The Earth Changes Lessons were developed by: • Erika Barrom and Susan Garrison, Sunnyside School District • Vicki Mitchell and, Kennewick School District • Georgia Boatman, Education Service District 123 • Jennifer Rieke, Art and Science Educator • Peggy Willcuts, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory • Karen Wieda, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory • This project was made possible with funds from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists. • The project also would not have been successful without the tremendous effort put forth by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA scientists who gave their knowledge, spirit, passion and patience to this project.
