HE 511Departmental and Divisional Leadership Unit 7: Ethical Decision Making
Focus of Seminar • To discuss the ethical issues and institutional involvement related to budgetary decisions • To answer questions about assignments in the course and share ideas.
Limited Resources • A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education describes the struggles that many colleges and universities are facing. According to Eric Kelderman (2009), there are at least 11 states where lawmakers are expected to make midyear cuts in the state budget. These cuts total more than $22 billion and higher education is expected to share the burden. Many institutions are already complaining of a shortage of funding in order to provide adequate facilities and services.
Limited Resources (cont.) • As an academic leader in a state college or university, how do you ethically decide where to cut your budget? What level of involvement should the rest of the institutional population have in making these decisions? How do you handle the inevitable backlash that occurs when cuts are made?
Questions: • Grading • Rubric • APA • Essential Writing Skills • Other questions?
