ORIGINS OF DERRY The name of this walled city derives from the old irish word “daire” meaning on oak grove on an island, totally or partially surrounded by water or peat bog. It is also known as the “maiden city” because its walls were never breached.
ST. COLUMBUS CATHEDRAL It is the oldest building in Derry. It was founded in honour of this Saint in 1633.

THE RIVER FOYLE This river divides Derry into two parts: the Foyleside and the Waterside.
THE GIANT’S CAUSEWAY The giant’s Causeway is a mass of basalt columns packed tightly together. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the foot of the cliff and then disappear under the sea. Altogether there are 40.000 of these stone columns, mostly hexagonal but some with four, five, seven and eight sides. The tallest are about 40 feet high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 90 feet thick in places.

MURALS There are a number of murals throughout the city which are symbolic of the different communities’ depictions of life through the Troubles. The Bogside Gallery and the Fountain area are well worth a visit to sample an alternative cultural experience.
Bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday is the event when on 30th January 1972 people who were marching for Civil Rights were gunned down by the British Army. This mural depicts the 14 who died.
A look at the famous murals throughout the city centre, which have had the world’s media attention, are testament to the role Derry played during “The Troubles”.
Both in the Bogside and the Fountain areas the communities have today used this type of pictorial representation to illustrate key events impacting on the city during this period.
The Bogside Artists have depicted key events of the troubles since the late 1960’s on murals around the Free Derry Corner.
