Ecosystems And Environments Vocabulary List #10 TEK 7.10ABC
Primary Succession The process of primary succession begins in essentially barren areas—regions in which the surface or material forming the foundation of the area cannot sustain life. Ex: Lava flows, newly formed sand dunes, etc.
Secondary Succession Takes place following a major disturbance, such as a fire or flood. Farmland that has been abandoned can undergo secondary succession; begins in an area that already has soil.
Pioneer Species Hardy species which are the first to colonize previously disrupted or damaged ecosystems, beginning a chain of ecological succession that ultimately leads to a more biodiverse, steady-state ecosystem. Ex: grasses, lichens, mosses
