Investigation 1, Part 1 Review • Rocks have many properties, including shape, size, color, and texture • Geologists use rock properties to help identify different rocks • Some dimensions of rocks can be measured and compared
Investigation 1 – Part 2 Review • The difference between rocks and minerals • Rocks are made up of different ingredients, minerals of only one. • How the minerals in a rock can be separated • Some minerals can be separated and identified by breaking the rock apart. • Some rock materials separate and settle when mixed with water. • Some minerals dissolve when mixed with water.
Investigation 1 – Part 2 Review • A rock is an earth material made up of different ingredients called minerals. • A mineral is an ingredient of rocks that cannot be broken down any further. We do not mean that it can’t be hit with a hammer and broken into smaller piece. We mean that no matter how many pieces you break it into, it is still the same material.
Material Getters • Carefully take the vials and hand lenses to your group. Do not shake them.
Vial Observations Day 2 • Our original challenge was to see if we could separate the ingredients in mock rocks by using water. • Describe what you see in your vials. • Record what you see in your Earth Materials Booklet Page 5 with a drawing and writing. • Be sure to show the separate layers you see in your vials.
What We Will Learn • That some minerals can be separated from rocks by adding water and allowing them to settle. • How to identify the materials that have dissolved in water.
Question • If there is something dissolved in the water, how would we be able to separate the water from the other material? • Talk in your groups and reporters should be ready to share your ideas. • What do you think would happen if we placed the liquid in this dish and let it sit for a few days?
Vocabulary • evaporation – liquid water turns into water vapor
What We Will Do • We will carefully pour only the liquid from the vial into the evaporation dish. We will only pour enough to just cover the bottom of the dish.
Materials • Material Getters will get • 4 evaporation dishes • 1 FOSS tray
Procedure • Put the label from your vial on the FOSS tray where the evaporation dish will sit. • Place the evaporation dish in the labeled section. • Carefully pour only enough water from your vial to just cover the bottom of the evaporation dish. • Managers – take the vials to the rinse-out station. Rinse them out and set them in the corners of the FOSS tray.
Procedure • Materials Collectors will take the trays to the counter and carefully stack them. • We will check the evaporation dishes after a few days. • We are doing this to separate the water from any solids that may have dissolved in the water.
