Definition • Web Definition: The computers built in the 1950s and the 1960s. These computers make use of the transistors invented by Bell Telephone laboratories and the had many of the same components as modern day computers. • In Our Own Words: They are computers that did not use microchips and used vacuum tubes.
History • The invention of the transistor outdated the first generation technology and marked the beginning of the second generation of computers. • Second Generation Computers started showing characteristics of modern day computers with utilities such as printers, disk storage, and operating systems.
What is a 2nd Generation Computer? • A second generation computer is a computer built from transistors, designed between the mid-1950’s and the mid-1960’s.
Who Used 2nd Generation Computers? • In the early 1960’s there commercially successful 2nd generation computers in business, colleges, and government companies such as: IBM, Honeywell, Control Data etc… • By 1965 most businesses processed financial information using 2nd generation computers.
Examples • 1957: FORTRAN- An acronym for Formula Translator was the first successful programming language. It could be read by anyone without any programming experience. • 1961: IBM 1400 Series- A breakthrough for IBM and the computing world. The system contained many peripherals which included high speed printers, and cost around $150,000
