  1. History In 1945 after Japan surrendered in WWII Korea split into two parts. The South was Under U.S. control and the North Under Russia. 1950- North Korea invaded the South. The raids ended by 1953 and the U.S. still patrols the North-South border to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Also in 1953 North Korea signed on with the NPT or Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty. In the 1964 Kim Sung-il the “Eternal Leader” of North Korea started a nuclear program.

History-Cont. • In the 1990’s North Korea progressed its missile program and started better refining its plutonium. • In 1992 North Korea continued its agreement in the NPT to allow inspections of its plants but in 1993 after a few inspections North Korea Threatened to withdraw for the NPT. • In 1994 President Clinton prepared for military action against North Korea after Jimmy Carter extracted a Promise from Kim Sung-il to halt the nuclear program. • Continuing into the 1990s the U.S got scattered info about North Korea about having enough plutonium to make several nuclear bombs and enriching uranium supplies.

  3. 2002-early2008 • In 2002 the Bush administration found that North Korea did have a program running to enrich uranium. In Dec. of that year N.K. also said it would start enriching its plutonium too and eject the program. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). • By 2003 N.K. had enriched enough plutonium and uranium to build several atomic bombs and by the end of the year they had built around 5 bombs. • In 2006 N.K. tested several of its nuclear devices by setting some off close enough to China that the U.S. condemned the tests. • In 2007 N.K. said it would dismantle its nuclear program.

  4. 2008-2009 • In early 2008 N.K. was taken of the terrorism list by the Bush admin. because N.K. submitted a 60 page paper on its nuclear • For the past several months since the Obama admin. Came in N.K. has reactivated its nuclear program and has been testing long range missiles and starting back up its nuclear facilities and threatening the U.S. to apologize for condemning its April 5 launch of a quote “Satellite” or it would start testing more nuclear weapons.

  5. Proposed Solution • Right now what we need to do is try to not enrage N.K. by being as peaceful as we can and work with China to try and get N.K. to dismantle its nuclear program and weapons.
