Reciprocal verbs • In French, the pronouns nous, vousand se may be used to make a verb reciprocal (verberéciproque). They mean (to/for/at) each other when added before a verb. • Nousnousaimons. We love each other. • Ilssesontrencontrés. They met each other.
Reciprocal verbs • In the passé composé, use être as the helping verb when you make a verb reciprocal. Make the past participle agree if the reciprocal pronoun (nous, vousor se) is the direct object of the verb. • Nous avons vu Paul hier. • Nous noussommesvushier. • Ellesontrevu Paul au musée. • Ellesse sont revues au musée.
Reciprocal verbs • Do not make the past participle agree with the reciprocal pronoun if it is the indirect object of the verb, that means if it answers the question “à qui?” Some verbs that take an indirect object are: conseiller, demander, dire, écrire, offrir, parler, plaireand téléphoner. • J’aiparléà Pauline. Nous noussommesparlé.
The past conditional • Use the past conditional to state the result in a hypothetical situation. Use the plus-que-parfaitin the si clause, and the past conditionalin the other clause. • S’ilavaitsula réponse, ilauraitréussison examen. • To form the past conditional , use the conditional of the helping verb (avoiror être) and add the past participle of the main verb. • Si nous avions vu les Renaud, nous leuraurionsparlé. • Ils se seraientréconciliéss’ilss’étaientparlé.
The past conditional • The past conditional is used by itself to state an event that could have taken place in the past, but did not. • Tuauraispum’aider! • You could have helped me!
The verbs manquer and plaire • Manqueris an irregular –er verb. • When used with a direct object, manquer means to miss something • Il a manqué le bus. He missed the bus. • When used with an indirect object, manquer à + a person or thing means to miss someone or something. • Ma soeurleurmanque. (Ma soeurmanqueà mes parents) • They (my parents) miss my sister.
The verbs manquer and plaire • The verb plaireà means to like. The past participle is plu. • Le cours de françaisplaît à moimais les maths ne plaisentpas du tout à moi. (I like French class, but I don’t like math.) • As a reflexive verb, se plairemeans to enjoy oneself at a place or event. • Je me suis beaucoup pluen Tunisiecetété. • As a reciprocal verb se plaire means to like each other. • Farid et Malikase sontplu tout de suite.
