  3. The Printing Press • Invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid 15th century • Significance • Free expression and exchange of ideas • Increased speed at which knowledge could be transmitted • Don’t have to memorize everything • No longer dependent on personal patronage or church sponsorship

  4. Christian Humanism • United classical learning with the Christian faith; and emphasis on piety • Balance otherworldly and secular concerns • Classics are a guide for living • Knowledge of classical languages allows for deeper understanding of the Christian faith

  5. Erasmus • In Praise of Folly • Satirized contemporaries pompousness, power, and wealth ignorance, greed • Directed against corrupt Churchmen, greedy merchants, etc…
