  2. Explanation of Assistive Technology • The emphasis on technology for individuals with disabilities has been thought of as assistive technology. • Extending the abilities of an individual in ways that provide physical access and sensory access. • Some examples of these technologies are wheelchairs, braces, and Braille. • The goal is to harness the potential of technology in ways that offer an individual with a disability better opportunities for independence, learning, and productivity.

  3. Legal and Policy Directives • The Technology-Related Assistance Act for Individuals with Disabilities: provides funding for assistive technology devices • Reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act: serves to remind schools of assistive technology and the importance of academic achievement by special education students • No Child Left Behind: AYP provides public documentation of performance criteria

  4. Hearing Impaired • Hearing loop (or induction loop) systems use electromagnetic energy to transmit sound. • This device helps eliminate background noise to make a message more clear.

  5. Visually Impaired • Braille is a writing and reading system used by the blind. • Braille can be types using a note-taker or typewriter. • Technology is working on a way to read Braille from a computer screen.

  6. Learning Disabled • Mobile translators can translate printer text quickly. • This helps the learning disabled by assisting with reading and comprehension.

  7. Physically Disabled • Electric wheelchairs allow students with physically disabilities to freely move around. • With power speed and stirring it is easy for the user to adjust to this technology.
