  2. MEANING? Means: wealthy, upper-class (alsoaninterpretation of thatis “being snob”) “Posh is a word with subtle shifting meanings all tied up in a changing class system.”

  3. Theorigins of posh Its origin is not known for certain, but the best guess is that it comes from a 19th century slang term for money that in turn is taken from a Romani (Gypsy) word. • The English slang use of posh to mean money appears as early as 1830 in the records of court proceedings. From the Sessions Papers of the Old Bailey from that year: • He had not got the posh (which means money) yet. • Posh, meaning upper-class, is definitely in existence by 1915. From Blackwood’s Magazine of that year:

  4. RecivedpronunciationorPoshaccent? • This accent it's called 'RP' because even 'posh' accents vary from region to region. Therefore, about 100 years ago or so (for those in the army or BBC) they decided to agree on ONE 'posh accent and train people in it. Therefore it is 'received' via training (hence 'received pronunciation) or called 'BBC'. No one is born with it- even the Queen has a slightly different accent to it although they are similar. • Sadly regional accents are dying out in the UK due to TV over-exposure. In 20 years our accent- some of which are dialects in their own right- may be lost.

  5. Thephonology • Any time there's an "ow“ sound, like in HOUSE, just replace it with an I.When there's an "o" sound like in GOING, mark the “O” When there's an "i" sound like in INTO, replace it with an E.

  6. Conclusion • The posh accent is the modification of the name in Received pronunciation. Adapted by people to sound polite/snob and aristocratic. The origins of when people started calling Posh accent are unknown but nowadays is completely accepted as an accent.
