Group Discussion Preparation…The Next Level After CAT 2014 Result
Tips to Stand Out in a Group Discussion : Every year CAT Exam brings surprises in the exam pattern, interview questions and group discussion topics. Now when the written exam is over, your focus should be on preparing for the GD round of various MBA colleges. Whatever the topic, there are a few rules to performing well in a group discussion.
1) Work on Your Communication Skills : • Through GDs, colleges check the candidates on communication skills. The various management programs are designed to create future managers, who are required to interact with people from different cities and professions. Hence, managers should have excellent communication skills. So, to crack the GD, your preparation should start with improving your communication skills.
2) Maintain Tone and Gestures : • Group discussions not only test the candidate on communication skills, but also other important things like body language. Hence, it is vital to maintain your tone and use the right body language. Many students get influenced by some hot topics of discussion and raise their voice to prove their point in a group. If you do not understand the need for maintaining the right tone while speaking, you may give an impression of an aggressive person and lose your GD points.
3) Gain Knowledge about Current Topics : : • Business schools through group discussions also check the candidates on their general awareness about the current issues of the society, economy, education, and other important events. To perform well in any hot discussion, it is vital to have proper knowledge about all the latest events in different fields. Group discussion topics can be given on any field such as technology, politics, science, economy, social issues or even bizarre topics. It is important to understand the topic and then plan the points to be discussed with the group.
4) Conduct Mock Group Discussions : • Just as reading is the best way to improve your knowledge on different current issues, the best method to prepare for a successful GD round in the B-school of your choice is to practice mock discussions. Such mock discussions with your friends make you feel more confident in facing the actual GD and also allow you to gauge the areas where you need to improve. A good way to check yourself is to have someone record you speaking and then as you watch yourself you will see how others see you.
5) Focus on Initiating and Concluding the Discussion : A group discussion usually includes eight to ten or even more participants. When everyone aims to get noticed, it becomes crucial to mark your presence in the later part of the discussion. Hence, it is advisable to try to be the first or at least second person to initiate the discussion. This not only allows you to direct the topic of discussion, but also reflects your capabilities to lead a group and confidence.
