  2. I. How can we work with a govt school – Sadras’ story • A group of people got together to improve the school in Sadras village in TN. Sadras school was then up to Class 5. • In 5 years, the village collected approximately Rs. 1,00,000. • They made the Rs. 1,00,000 Public Deposit Fund. • They then filled out the State Dept application form to upgrade the school from Class 5 to Class 8.

  3. II. How the school went from Class 5 to Class 12.. • The state educational dept decided to upgrade Sadras school to Class 8 after 3 years. • The govt appointed a Headmaster right-away. • There were no buildings, or additional teachers or learning materials yet. • The village donated money for appointing ad-hoc teachers to the PTA and the PTA hired teachers.

  4. III. No govt sanctioned buildings yet..and where are the teachers? • A local corporation built classrooms after getting clearance from the local govt officials. • The school PTA applied to the Sarva Shiksha Abigyan scheme for funds for a classroom and learning materials. • The building officially becomes school property. • The school needs learning material, black boards, class rooms, running water and teachers. It has students.

  5. IV. They should ask the SSA.. • The SSA scheme sanctioned a classroom and gave the panchayat the contract to build the class room. • One more class room was built. • The TN govt had a Nammakku Name thittam – if the PTA gives 25% funds, they would put in 75% funds for toilets, compound walls or class rooms.

  6. V. And in 10 years, with the help of govt, public and community support.. • ..The school had buildings, teachers, running water, learning materials and toilets. • The govt eventually appointed a full set of teachers.
